April Sunshine

April Sunshine
Sitting in the warm April sunshine
Wondering at the bright colours all around
The shocking boldness of daffodils
The vibrant yellow of Forsythia
Against a pale blue sky
Fledgling leaves, pale green
Fight to be seen
And pink buds waiting
To burst onto the scene
Around me the birds tell
Their stories of Springtime love
Their promises to be true
So strident and persistent
The male bird calls
And quietly back comes the refrain
Can I trust you with my love?
Can I trust you with my heart?
Each year the energy of Spring
Kicks the tiredness of Winter up the arse
The simplicity and matter-of-factness
Making me question
Why we have to complicate our lives
This will all happen
If I’m part of it or not
But happy that for another year
I can trust you with my love
I can trust you with my heart

Half Morning Light

Half Morning Light (My own sweet boy)
Lying in the half morning light
Watching you as you sleep
Your face looks soft and young again
Just as it did when you were first
My own sweet boy
There were several years between us
In years I was the older of us two
In experience, different, but about the same
I was brought to a different life
By my own sweet boy
Some said it wouldn’t last
Gave it but a year or two
But many years have now past
And you are still
My own sweet boy
Over twenty summers have now past
There’s been joy and laughter
But also, pain and tears
But still you remain
My own sweet boy
Lying here beside you
The feel of your skin still thrills
The close warmth of your body
Still moves me to desire
For my own sweet boy
With rainbows of colour
Still exploding in my head
I lie in the warm afterglow of love
Still moved to that ecstasy
By my own sweet boy
And so lying here beside you
Watching your face as you sleep
You look so young and soft again
Just as you did
Just as you did
Just as you did
When you were first
My own sweet, sweet boy

Stones and Pebbles

|

Stones and Pebbles
Stones and pebbles in a row
On the window sill
Each one recalls a time we had together
Some jagged and rough
The others, shiny and smooth
The last an almost perfect heart
Found that day
On a Suffolk shore
You ask me if I love you
I reply I do
No one is perfect
And neither are you
But I love you
Just as you are
But I love you
Just as you are
There’s no stone to recall
That first meal I cooked for you
Afterward you said
I looked so sad and lonely
You had to rescue me
You ask me if I love you
I reply I do
No one is perfect
And neither are you
But I love you
Just as you are
But I love you
Just as you are
No pebble tells the story
Of our walk home in early dusk
Finding a tiny red fox
Lying dead at the curb
Your tears flowed so easily
And mingled with my own
You ask me if I love you
I reply I do
No one is perfect
And neither are you
But I love you
Just as you are
But I love you
Just as you are
Stones and pebbles in a row
On the window sill
Remind me of our days
Not just when they were gathered
But ones who’s memories
Are deep in my heart
You ask me if I love you
I reply I do
No one is perfect
And neither are you
But I love you
Just as you are
But I love you
Just as you are
But I love you
Just as you are
But I love you

When You Were Young

When you were young
Do you remember?
Do you recall?
When you were young
When you were small
Needing to run
On entering a large space
Outside with arms
Wheeling through the air
Inside the sound
Of your footsteps
Making you stamp your feet
Your echo calling back to you
Do you remember?
Do you recall?
When you were young
When you were small
Wrapped in your warm coat
Hat and gloves
Amazed by your breath
In the cold frosty air
And the silver rim
On fences, trees and grass
Do you remember?
Do you recall?
When you were young
When you were small
Needing to make a noise
Wherever you are
Stamping your feet
Or flying down the street
Playing the music of childhood
On the railings
Do you remember?
Do you recall?
When you were young
When you were small
Lying in the long grass
Watching the ants
As they march back and forth
The warm sun playing on your back
Soft breezes in your face
Do you remember?
Do you recall?
When you were young
When you were small
Do you remember?
Do you recall?
When you were young
When you were small
